The Vice chancellor of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Prof. Benjamin Ozumba has been given Best University Administrator of the Year award by the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Nsukka chapter.
The Vice Chancellor further said, “Other people have to emulate the University of Nigeria. That’s why some of the policies we have been enacting, by the grace of God, not by my own grace, will be emulated all over Nigeria. We cannot afford to remain where we are globally. I just came back from Rwanda where every child has a laptop; children in elementary school. But you know that an average journalist in Nigeria does not have a laptop. And that is what I am stamping out of the University of Nigeria. We shall get there. (University of Nigeria) Nsukka was set up to cast light all over. Everything done in Nsukka is copied.
Other awardees are Director, Nsukka College of Education, Chief Emma Ugwuerua (JP) Distinguished Educationist of the Year; Hon Festus Onogwu, Best Market Administrator of the Year and Chief Mike Umunnakwe Uba, Best Petroleum Dealer of the Year.
. Ozumba received the award at the Union’sLecture/Award Nite held last Friday at Jerry Marriot Hotels, Nsukka.
According to the NUJ chairman, Mr Harrison Ogara, before the leadership of Prof Ozumba, “Mendaciousness, corruption, impunity, impudence and official sleaze were a way of life. Workers and students were intimidated. The host communities were alienated and thrown overboard in the scheme of things but today, all these are history.”
Mr Ogara further asserted that since Prof Ozumba took over the saddle of the university administration, he “came into the university with a human face and had since been rebuilding the broken walls of ‘Jerusalem’.”
In his acceptance speech, Prof Ozumba appreciated the NUJ for giving him the award and called on them to cooperate with him in the discharge of his duties as a public servant. In his words, “I am honoured and humbled to receive this award. It was never expected. I am happy that I am here today to recognize the very important role you are playing in nation building and as important watchdog.”
